Monday Practice (Free Yourself of Projections & Polarizations)

Do you experience repeated conflicts and inexplicably stalled negotiation situations? Do you find it difficult to accept feedback? No constructive solutions to conflicts in the relationship at hand?
The issue is not quite new, but I am thinking still, we as social beings, cannot disregard we recognize ourselves in the other (loosely based on Martin Buber: "Me and You").
For about nine years now, I suggest to my clients to adopt an exercise from the Sanskrit for the journey, which I call "the Monday practice" ( ... because I allow this one to myself every Monday):
Whenever I meet a being on this day of the week

  • that pleases me (more often now ...)
  • or annoys me (what happens ... fortunately less and less)
I pause for a moment and think to myself: "Tat Tvam Asi" (a Sanscrit Sutra which translates very freely to "I am that as well !")
I exhale, let go of the idea and carry on with what I'm doing.

You guessed already, this is - especially in the beginning - not always easy, particularly if you encounter someone who embodies unsympathetic sides.
Nevertheless, this exercise helps me personally, to recognize projections and dissolve them this way. Whenever this happens, counter-projections magically vanish in the haze, and the work starts getting incredibly easy. After a day like this in the evening I feel refreshed and relaxed. By the way, customers affirmed that they have grown fond of the Monday practice by now, which helps them in an easy way to gaining authenticity.

Leaflet:

  • Practice this exercise possibly only on Mondays, you would otherwise find yourself and your communication partners overcharged and by the too rapid changes jeopardize the balance of your system (your team, your group, your family).
  • In addition You might need the other days to focus on other important issues.
  • If you find yourself in a situation when arguing suddenly stopped and thus You lack "the icing on the cake" just dose down the little exercise, or
  • You just get used to the inner and outer peace :)
  • If You apply this exercise during a conflict-laden meeting, You might experience amazing things sometimes, or "almost magic".
I wish You a lot of success and I'm looking forward to reading about Your hands-on experience in the comments occasionally.
Namasté !
